End of the road for hospital footbridge as Gledhow Wing refurbishment gathers pace

Work is already well underway to upgrade the entrance, retail and restaurant areas in the ground floor of the Gledhow Wing, to create a muchimproved atmosphere for patients, visitors and staff.

Opened in 1979, the Gledhow Wing currently has an unusual front entrance arrangement, with most people entering the building on the ground floor, but with an alternative entrance directly above, accessible by the footbridge. This layout has been acknowledged as less than ideal, and the new arrangement of a single front entrance will allow better for access to all users.
Tracey Ensbey, Project Manager for the scheme, commented: “As with many building works, inevitably some shortterm disruption is necessary. The Gledhow Wing footbridge will close from Monday 1 December, and a little later it will be safely removed. Changes to nearby road access and traffic flows will also be necessary, lasting for the next six months.
“As well as installing a magista obra kids new temporary ground floor main entrance, work will also need to be carried out to the link corridor leading from the ground floor Gledhow Wing entrance to the Lincoln Wing, as the corridor is structurally connected to the bridge.
“Everything possible is being done to keep access functioning as normally as possible, but we would ask people to bear with us whilst these important changes are made. The improvements will transform this very wellused part of the hospital and should make a real difference to the patient experience,
Whilst the majority of Gledhow Wing visitors use the ground floor entrance, the footbridge is used by some people visiting departments on Level 4 of the wing, including the antenatal clinic, colposcopy and bereavement liaison. Signs are being put up warning people of the changes, and the departments will be fully accessible internally via the main entrance.
