I don’t need to be the bringer of bad news, But maybe it wasn’t your hard disk. Not to assume anything did you test the hard in unique computer? I realize in all probability ran an hd test but if you ran it on a bad mobo its possible(Impossible) But entirely feasible that the mobo would have caused an hd test to fail while the hd test would blame the hd. If the hard drive tested bad see provided you can aquire another copy of windows xp. I know it seems unlikely but i had a similar issue with one of the machines i worked on and using a different copy of windows xp took care of it. I know it sounds absurd, But its likely even without scratches or noticeable blemishes that something is wrong with the disk. Good luck hope it will aid.
I’ve been in your same model. It ended up being connected with the motherboard. I was able to reinstall and then a few green soccer shoes months later, The new hard drive acted like it had gone bad likewise as the original drive. I did an image restore to an alternate new hard drive which worked for a while and then failed(My failures were repeated lost chunks of data until plans and the O/S would stop running).
